In My Kitchen September 2014

Here we are again if you can believe it.  Another month has rolled around, and here we are doing In My Kitchen with Celia from Fig Jam and Lime Cordial once again.  I am thinking Halloween, Christmas, summer hols etc already.  You know I'm right:)
I have had a lovely month with lots of goodies in August; in fact I can't believe just how many goodies turned up.  Lucky me!  So here we go- drumroll please-ta dah!

gorgeous hand-made measuring spoons from America,
given to me (belatedly) by my oldest friend for my birthday

cute olive/pickle forks that I bought at an olive farm shop

delish edibles from Stanthorpe, including wonderful local verjus

locally made board and spoon from the Stanthorpe winery region-
the spoon is made from an American oak barrel that
was burned in a fire at Ballandean estate a few years ago.
Many years of memorabilia were destroyed but
a local artisan asked if he could take the pieces of wood and
make something out of them-et voila!  A beautiful and useful spoon
which still shows the blackened wood and scorch marks from the fire

oh yes! more Falconware in my kitchen- how could I not
when it is so versatile and beautiful?

this little jar holds barberries-given to me by an Iranian friend
who brings them back from Iran (or gets friends to do so)
as they can be difficult to find here

yay! I got myself an Opinel knife at last-so gorgeous and easy to use,
and really made in France unlike those other so-called French knives-
you know who I mean.  I thought it might be hard to flick
like a Swiss Army knife,  but no, it slides in easily to the handle

yep more hot chocolate-white this time

and another NZ book-what is happening to me?
(And I loved Margaret Mahy's books as a young thing)

a fab book with healthy recipes from a Brisbane author whose sister
got cancer so she decided to write a book with nutritious dishes
that would sustain and satisfy

this is weird stuff! I hate cling-wrap so i bought this re-usable food saver
which feels like jelly and is squishy and blue!
Not sure how I feel about it yet- it tends to pop off at odd moments!

Well, Spring has sprung and it is another beautiful day here in Brisbane.  Hope everyone else is having a wonderful September- one of my favourite months!  So glad August is over; I have always had a thing about that month; it just doesn't suit me!  I am off to check out the other IMK posts on Celia's blog.  Cheers!

  3. I love your measuring spoons. Did they come from Anthropology? I did see some similar measuring spoons when I was in NY. It looks like you have some lovely new cookbooks too. I've never heard of the 'cover blubber' but have heard glad-wrap is not good for us xx

  6. I'm so in love with those handmade measurement spoons, what a special gift from your friend. That is something that you can keep and treasure forever. Also great minds think alike, I've had that verjuice before. I haven't read Alison Taafe's book yet but I've worked with her before and she is great.

    1. hi jem
i do like the verjuice cos it is fairly local but it is a tad too sweet for me . I think I will buy the white one next time. lucky you to have worked with alison before. she seems very nice and i can't wait to have a cooking session with her.

  9. HI Sherry - lovely story about the wooden board rising from the ashes at Ballandean Estate. If you are ever looking for Barbarries, they have them at a Middle Eastern grocery shop called 'Paradise' on Logan Rd, Stones Corner, just opposite the pub. They are in bags in the fridge. cheers xx

  10. I love the measuring spoons too! It's hard to resist the Falcon ware isn't it - I bought that exact same set of mixing bowls as well. I'm almost nervous to ask.. what do you use your new flick knife for? ;-)

    1. i love that cookbook! I have had it for donkeys' years, and use it often. yes that cover blubber is weird stuff- i like the idea of it but I am not sure it works as well as it should...When it stays on, it is great.
