In My Kitchen May 2015

Mmm, was there much going on in my kitchen this past month?  Not a heck of a lot I fear.  I think the change of weather is getting to me, giving me sinus aches and sniffles.  Once again Brisbane has been in the thick of a weather event the last couple of days (what a funny expression these weather people use!).  Very sadly 5 people including a little boy were drowned in flood waters.  It was taking people 5 hours to commute home in the rain last night. (written last Saturday).  Thank goodness, both myself and Mr P. were home all day, and didn't have to brave the torrential rain, and the thunderstorm that went on for 5 hours or more.  I think the storm was separate to the low which caused the rain!  I was in my kitchen cooking up a Nigella nutella cheesecake instead.  And what could be nicer than that on such a terrible day?

not the best photo but you get the idea

once again this year I grabbed a bottle of this special oil - expensive but worth it:)

some local honey I bought at an olive farm festival

couldn't resist this cute little grinder even though I make my own extract.
This brand actually comes from the Queen factory up the road from our place!

now who can resist real Canadian maple syrup?  Not I said the fly!:)

I adore olive salt!

I read about this on a blog recently; yep pretty darn delish!

not really in my kitchen but I had to add this in.  A commemorative red poppy dish from NZ for Anzac Day.

olive oil from the local olive farm festival

a bucket of chillies from our neighbour across the road; I just slung them into the freezer for later use!

It was an emotional month what with the Anzac Day ceremonies, the execution of the Bali Nine duo, people drowning in the stormwaters (yes, I know technically that was in May) and a bit of sinus-y bother for me.  At least this month has started off really well - with a new princess!  She is so pretty, don't you think?  And a visit next week from some of our northerly relatives will brighten up the month too.  Thanks Celia from Fig Jam and Lime Cordial for hosting this monthly get-together of food bloggers from all over the world.  And join in everybody, by sharing your kitchen goodies with the rest of us:).

  2. Yes, the new princess is very pretty and it's lovely to have some good news in the news. We had those terrible 'weather events' here in Sydney too where four people drowned in flood waters. I bunkered down and cooked in the kitchen - no point stepping outside. I love your commemorative poppy xx

    1. Hi Charlie
The terrible thing with the drownings was they were all preventable. They drove into creeks and one chap kayaked up a big storm drain!! So silly and a waste. The poppy dish is so cute. It is by a Kiwi ceramicist for Anzac Day.

    1. Hi Gretchen
Sadly this month is pretty grim too with the Nepal earthquake. Ah well it is better to keep away from the news I think. On a brighter note the weather is perfect and we are finally getting a bit of cool weather Yay.

the popcorn really does taste like apple. so weird. hard to believe we had such rain and storms as it is the most beautiful blue sky day today, as were the last few days. the weather gods like to keep us on our toes.:)

  14. That grinder looks like a great idea. Sorry to hear you are not well. I think the change of season often brings out sinus issues. Terribly tragic about people drowning in storms. Have a super rest of your month :)

  15. What do you mean there is not much happening in your kitchen, there is loads that I am admiring, but especially the poppy dish. I have soe Taylor and Colledge stuff in my kitchen too, its vanilla paste - but I am liking the maple syrup and the pretty jar. I also hope the season changes for the better, its so sad that people are losing their lives because of the weather. And I hope your feeling better too.
