In My Kitchen - August 2022

August already?  Let's not even go there!  July has been cold and wet here in not so sunny Brisbane.  You may say: 'So what?  It's winter isn't it?'  Sure, but our winters are normally all blue sky and sunshine, and no rain.  Our backyards end up looking like a hay field - dry and brown.  So this weather is most odd! 

I'm just making a big pot of vegetable soup, with some poached chicken, and chickpeas thrown in at the end.  It's such a lovely feeling to have soup on the stovetop on a cool day.  Mr P. and I will soon rug up and head out for a brisk walk in the cooling afternoon air.  I do enjoy wrapping up in a couple of scarves and a coat; so unusual for us normally.  

And that brings up memories of freezing our buns off in wintry Philadelphia one Christmas, staying with our Quaker friend; Mr P. doing the Hogmanay thing of 'first-footing', where a dark-haired male should be the first one over your threshold for the New Year, carrying whisky, salt and coal.  But no, he didn't have any of those things to hand.  Just the dark hair and being male thing going on ...

An oldie but a goodie!  I know I've put this one up before, but it's so funny with that red nose.  I was sooooo cold I cried.  This was taken at a Christmas pageant (little girls in tiny tutus!!) in sunny (hahaha!) Lansdale PA.

The curveball!  I bought this on our weekend away in Toowoomba recently.  I love naïve/folk art, and this reminds me of the Canadian artist Maud Lewis.  The top one is by Vanessa Perske, another Queensland artist.  I've always wanted one of hers, completely forgetting that I already have this one.  She is well-known for her emu portraits :-)

  1. Those butter biscuits you have ... we have something very much like that in the U.S. ... although I'm pretty sure it's imported. Anyway, easy to find nonetheless, and so good! I love to treat myself to them on occasion.

  4. I love the Ritter Butter Biscuits. I buy them every once in a while. I think I need the vanilla salt. No. idea why I need it or what I would do with it other than salting caramels, but I am almost positive I need it.

  5. Your post dropped in about 15 minutes ago just in time for a big mug of strong black coffee ! Guess where I have been > finding out all about the Greek Providore and Black Garlic . . . I can see rather an expensive shopping expedition coming :) ! Oh, must find out about the salt collection next . . . don't use much for health reasons and buy from Gewurtzhaus but . . . fun post even for one who does not touch desserts or cake . . . thank you !!!

  6. Loads of really good stuff in your kitchen this month! I'm with those that are craving those butter biscuits -- love those things. And although we eat soup in the summer, not nearly as much as we do when the weather turns cooler -- really looking forward to that!

  10. I love your birthday vintage honeypot Sherry, because we are into bees. I'm sure the birthday gin hit the spot.You always have such lovely artwork to display. Happy birthday to you. By the way I don't think your IMK post came to my email this month unless I deleted it accidently but don't think so, I had to go into my Reading List on Blogger to find it, Very strange. Are my posts coming to your email? Anyway enjoy all of those delicious finds in your kitchen. Not much Winter left up here unfortunately, I've been loving it. Not as much rain as you.

  11. Hi Sherry - hope you are feeling better! Now, I have to say this os one of my favorite of your "In My Kitchen" posts - for starters, I am from Philadelphia and I know (and cannot stand) those damp, cold winters there. My high school teams played Lansdale, too! Fun to live in Arizona now, where coats are a thing of the past!

    As for your wonderful array of things? I just bought 3 Ritter Marzipans yesterday! What a coincidence. Love them. And Mr. P's chocolate set? As I am a cocoa drinker (never have tried coffee or tea - it's the smell!), this is fantastic. And hot chocolate is so much more decadent than hot cocoa. Yum! The Pride and Pudding book - how fun! And the gine (yes, please) and milk pitcher are wonderful, too. And, as always, I love your art. You have a fantastic eye. Take good care...

  12. OMG.. I live in Pennsylvania and have felt quite frozen at some parades! Now I watch on TV!! The Pride and Pudding Cookbook looks very interesting. The honeypot is such a sweet gift (I love honeypots) and I'm sure you will enjoy the gin!

  13. I often forget the other side of the world is experiencing winter. We are cooking from the inside out here in Florida (laugh).
    A pot of soup is a wonderful comfort during the cold dreary months of winter. As always, thanks for sharing.

  16. That photo from back in the day in Pennsylvania is awesome - were they parading a full-size snowman down the middle of a neighborhood street!? Sounds like my kinda party! On the food side, those Dolmades from The Greek Providore sound delicious - now I'm craving Greek food!!

  18. It is a miserable soggy winter down here too! But I am impressed by your foodie treats. That hot chocolate hamper and the vanilla salt have really caught my attention. The vintage crockery is really lovely and Pride and Pudding looks like interesting reading!
