The Last Post Ceremony at the Australian War Memorial |
Our niece has just joined the RAAF, so we were down in Canberra for the big parade after her first bit of training. It was a very moving and exciting experience. We also visited The War Memorial for the Last Post ceremony and wreath laying ceremony. It is all very moving and hubby and I both had tears in our eyes.
My granddad was at Gallipoli; he got blown up and was sent back to England for a year before going home to Australia. Hubby's great-uncle was in the Light Horse in WWI so we both feel very emotional about these things. So I suggest to you all if ever in Australia/Canberra - head here!
That's really interesting and I can just imagine how moving it must have been for you both. There's something so peaceful about this photo, despite the crowds.
ReplyDeleteit was a lovely evening sarah. the sun just starting to lose its heat, and the sky a glorious blue. bagpipes always make my heart sing, so when they played Amazing Grace, i was a teary mess as was hubby.
DeleteI can imagine how moving that must have been - we were in the Somme one year for Armistice Day and attended the service at the Thiepval memorial which was intensely moving. Moments like these really make you stop and think. This photo is beautiful - I love the reflections in the water.
ReplyDeletethanks louise. we were both surprised by how moving it was. it just makes you think of all those poor boys killed and mutilated. so sad.
DeleteA very impressive building on a bright blue day, good luck to your Niece.
ReplyDeletethanks fiona. we are very proud of her. she is an officer cadet and will be a pilot at the end, flying those huge airforce planes. it is scary too. i mean it is too easy to forget that they are being trained to kill people when it comes to it.
DeleteI can imagine it was a day full of conflicting emotions, though it looks like a lovely day for the ceremony and a beautiful place to hold it too.
ReplyDeleteit was such a brilliant day with parades at the start and end. and very emotional. the War Memorial is a very special place.

DeleteBeautiful photo and sentiment Sherry. I've done quite a bit of work in mental health with veterans and have the utmost respect for all.
ReplyDeletei think we are all much more interested and fascinated by military life now. my hubby has a great interest in such matters and has done alot of reading about the 2 WW's. it means so much now.
DeleteI always am very emotional about these things Sherry - even on the TV. To be there must have been felt on another level.
