In My Kitchen - June 2019

June and it's finally getting a bit colder here in sunny Brisbane town.  Still sunny but cool.  We are heading out soon for sushi and I may have to wear a big scarf!...  And I did indeed put on my warm winter coat and a scarf last night.  I'm sitting here now with two scarves, and socks on my feet (well, where else would I have them?  Silly me.)  Brrrr....

Let's get to it, my virtual friends.  And don't forget to join in this month.  I wanna see you all right here! :-)

So, in my kitchen:

home made hummus

I whizzed up a batch of hummus one recent morning, adding some lime pressed olive oil.  So delicious!  And so good for your gut health.

bags of grated cheese heading for the freezer

I had a block of cheddar and one of parmesan in the fridge, heading to oblivion, so I grated them up and shoved them into the freezer.  So handy, so thrifty, no waste:-)

yep another cookbook for the shelves

This book was put together by generous cooks and photographers to help farmers in need who have been living under the terrible stress of prolonged drought then flood.  Many farmers had been hand-feeding their stock for months, only to have them swept away and/or drowned in recent floods.  So heartbreaking for them.  Proceeds from the book go towards helping the farmers.

more salt! and some sprinkles

Who could resist Nonna's spaghetti sprinkle?  Not me.  A mix of herbs, chillies and spices, ready to be thrown over pasta and olive oil.  Gotta try it soon.

a fancy shark peeler from friends

Lady J. and Lord N. came to dinner bearing gifts including this shark peeler: it peels, it shreds, it slices, it juliennes - a master of all trades in fact:-)

raw local honey

They also brought us this raw honey from up the coast, at Mount Kilcoy.  As you can see, it is an Aussie product, and unprocessed.  And it has a cute bee on the label.  Winner!

Mr P.'s birthday cake

I forgot to put up a photo of hubby's cake last month, so here it is.  I made Nigella's birthday custard sponge, and went wild with chocolate ganache and sprinkles.  I think she'd be proud.

as per the label

I'd just run out of the curry powder I use, so I dashed out to the local spice store to grab a packet, and noticed this cute little supoon.  Yes it is indeed a supoon.  Perfect for scraping out tall jars etc.  I thought of giving it away as a gift, but I loved it too much.

a gorgeous little bowl by Starr

I have a beautiful cup and saucer and a plate made by the delightful Starr, so I had to add this sparkly little bowl to my collection.  It is full of colour and shine; just so pretty.

  1. Got my post ready to link up on June 2 (which will be your third!). I love reading your posts, especially as you talk about winter scarfs as I pull out my sandals and shorts. :) Love the spices and again, your pottery! Farmers all over the world are experiencing trials and tribulations. Glad to see funds from the cookbook will go to their cause.

  2. Supoon? New word to me, but the all-powerful google has loads of them for sale! They come in many colors with many types of handle. Maybe I need one!

The rest of your new things are neat too.

  4. Yes a cooler time has arrived finally in sunny ole Brisbane, in fact quite cool. Apparently the minimum temperatures in southern Queensland broke a lot of May records. Some places were down to minus 6 even.
Mrs P has become a master of the hummus. So tasty. Her new spoon is a wonderful gadget.

  5. Ooh that cake looks scrumptious.

It tickles me to see the sachet of Sri Lankan curry powder. What type of curry did you make?

    1. hi Nil
I don't actually use it for curries as i make up my own, but i do use it when i want to quickly spice up egg and lettuce sandwiches or something like that. It's my fave variety of curry powder.

  6. A fine June kitchen collection indeed. Now I'm way on the other end of the world and I thought we had about anything one wished for but I've not seen or heard of spaghetti sprinkles, much less a supoon. I must research these.

  7. The supoon reminded me of my 'ergonomic' bent-handle snow shovel which is good for pushing snow. Checked Amazon and they do have some "fun" gadgets!

  8. Ooh why is it called a supoon? Am I missing something there? :) Thanks for hosting Sherry!

    1. Hi Lorraine
Not sure why a supoon but I think it's because it supports itself on the little neck thingy. The bowl doesn't touch the bench so your bench stays clean:-)

  9. I am early with IMK which is not like me at all, but I am pleased. Love the sparkles in the bowl, as you may know I do love pottery but don't have much of it in my home! That shark peeler looks vicious! I admire farmers around the world who are having such as tough time, farming is hard as it is in the best of time, so its good to see such a publication.

  10. That bowl is truly delightful. So pretty. I have a suppoon but rarely use it. Great Aussie company! I know they work well but just haven't gotten into the habit of using it. Re: Cheese and zero waste. The most we use on a regular basis the couple of fistfuls of grated on the pizza every Friday night. I am wracked with guilt though as it comes pre-grated in a plastic bag. I looked to buy a block and grate it myself but it is no cheaper and also wrapped in plastic. I am on the search for a wholesaler who will send me a larger 2.5kg catering block as retail so at least there is not as much soft plastic waste. I laughed about your scarf comment - yep, winter is finally here. No autumn, just winter. Back to summer in late August though so enjoy it while you can.

    1. yes it's difficult isn't it? bloody plastic wrap everywhere but at least the cheese tastes better when freshly grated. oh yes i am enjoying wrapping my scarf around my neck. tee hee!

  11. Oh I do love your little bowl, it's very pretty.
But, as I live in the very chilly Adelaide Hills where it is currently 4C, I have to smile at the idea of you rugging up. My sister lives in Brisbane, so I know how cold it doesn't get.

  16. Smoked garlic salt!? Sherry, where has this been hiding for my whole life? This sounds amazing. Speaking of cool spices, I found a roasted garlic powder recently, and that's pretty tasty. I'll have to watch for that smoked garlic salt, though! Stay warm, my virtual friend!

  18. Beautiful bowl and beautiful cake too (I have similar sprinkles and haven't used them so this looks a great way to use them). Is the salt rocks that need to be ground - it looks it but do not usually see flavoured salts that need to be ground. I like the idea of freezing cheese and also of supporting farmers - it must be such a tough job - and yet so important

  26. I love the new stuff in your kitchen this month - especially your shark peeler and supoon! I normally use my skinny rubber spatula to clean out jars, but that looks like it would do a much better job. I've been freezing for weeks now in Canberra, this time of year I always feel like I'll never be warm again. Sleeping in socks, wearing two jackets, etc. Thanks for hosting the linkup!
