In My Kitchen - March 2019

Yay it's March and Autumn, at last!  I think this summer has been one of the hottest on record, but Winter here we come.  I tend to hang around the house without clothes in Summer.  Fortunately this year I haven't been caught out by people at the front door.  Though I have been quite a few times by the neighbour who likes to climb up his ladder and paint his house or clean his gutters.

I boldly throw open the shutters, boobs bared, to find him dangling from his rooftop, paintbrush in hand.  He splutters and turns away, while I slam the shutters ... well - shut.  Mr P. is so used to this habit of mine, that he always asks if I'm decent before bringing anyone in.  Quite often I'm not - decent that is.  Sorry, my thoughts are meandering here.  Let's get on with In My Kitchen.

a look into my pantry

I love my pantry with its casement window, but I keep saying to Mr P. that I want a butler's pantry too in our next house!  One is definitely not enough for a blogger, don't you think?  Otherwise I want a cabin with a kitchen, out in the backyard ...

So here in my Kitchen:

guess! :-)

These are local products, grown chemical-free on a farm not that far from Brisbane.  You can see that anything 'caper' is a hit in our household.  I have tried to buy Australian capers regularly but it seems there are not that many farmers growing them here, sadly.  So when I can get them, I happily stock up.

another ceramic mug

You know I'm a bit obsessed with ceramics, and here we have a gorgeous new mug from a potter down in Northern New South Wales who calls her business 'Sit Still Lauren'.  It has an indentation for your thumb so you can hold it easily.  When Mr P. saw it, he said it was faulty and I should send it back.  Silly Mr P.!

salt and scissors

My cousin gave me the salt, which comes from a farm in Victoria (where she lives).  The owners are a young couple who grow the garlic and turn it into gourmet salts.  Salt - another of my food obsessions:-)  I thought I'd join the trend, and get me some of these herb scissors.  I tried them on parsley (not so successful), but I'm hoping other herbs will do better.

cute cup and saucer

I bought this at the National Gallery of Victoria, when we were in Melbourne recently.  They were having an M. C. Escher exhibition; this cup and saucer is in his style, apparently.

another gift from my Melbourne cousin

This classic dry gin is made in Victoria by the Original Spirit Co., which was set up by two young men a few years ago.  The gin is made with the usual suspects like juniper berries and coriander seeds, but includes seven (secret) native Australian ingredients too.

another cookbook

One of our nieces gave me this delightful copy of a pseudo old-fashioned cookbook, filled with granny's recipes (not my granny but somebody's).  It is a really sweet book, full of handwritten recipes and notes.  Can't wait to try the wonderfully old-fashioned dishes.

Please feel free to join in this month, everyone.  Looking forward once again to hosting your fabulous IMK posts.  Cheers, Sherry.

  2. Happy end-of-February. We are also eagerly awaiting a change of seasons, but it's very very cold again today and many of our sidewalks are terribly and dangerously icy. So we hope for spring while you hope for autumn.

I love your Escher cup. I've been an Escher fan for ages.

  8. Wow, so many ways with capers. I love it and if they were near me, I too would be stocking up. I pickle my own nasturtium seeds and treat them like capers, but admit you cant best the real thing. Gin has indeed made a comeback with so many variations on it too.

  11. Hi Sherry - great little reflections on summer in your kitchen - sounds like passerbys might have some surprises :-) I too am ready for autumn. I love your ceramics - you always buy amazing stuff - love the sit still lauren mug - you probably need a butlers pantry for all your amazing cups - and perhaps a butler too :-) I have finally got up my IMK post for the month and linked in the linky

  12. Thank you for your kind comment and I’m delighted to join in this month! Love your cup and saucer and the ceramics. Gin, I love gin! I’m a seasonal drinker it seems so I usually enjoy a good G&T in summer or warmer weather. As I’m in a different hemisphere it’s quite cold here now. Even in Florida.

Oh, I agree about the pantry idea in the next house. I want that too.

  15. Sherry, I love your "free spirit" despite the nosy neighbors (tee hee) and your ceramic bowl, capers, and secret ingredient gin, too. So sorry to hear you've had troubles with the herb scissors though -- love mine. (Try, try again?) One quick glance at my pantry and I can soooo identify with your wish for a Butler's Pantry "next house." I'm finally up & running (hallelujah) against all odds. Can't wait to see what's up elsewhere. Thank you!

  16. I'd love a cabin out the back. I keep telling Mr Tiffin that we are going to get a shipping container. He recoiled in horror at the thought of the expense and the effort. I love Bunya Red's capers also. They have had a tough year so I think they will be thin on the ground for the next 6 months. I visited an olive farm in the Scenic Rim recently where they hadn't had one olive. Not one. They also grow limes and had no limes so it was a double harvest failure. What climate change?

'Winter here we come'… oh Sherry, you make me laugh.

  18. Is it just me or has it gone from summer to winter though rather than having autumn in between? How funny is your story about your neighbor spotting you topless! Oh my gosh. I can't say I've been caught topless in recent years (my teenage sons would drop dead in embarrassment) but as we've been toilet training our youngest there has been a lot of naked 3 year old boy parts running around our house the last few months. LOL The ceramic mug is beautiful, as is your National Gallery of Victory cup and saucer. Thanks for hosting again this month! =)
